Case study: Duisberg North Park

I am interested in designing an experience where audience questions the authenticity of the experience they are having and how can one tell if the experience is ‘real’. This experience should be subtle, to make people aware of it themselves. This case study is where the actual old factory is renovated into a park but would the experience of being in that space be authentic? or does the existing context of it does not affect the 'realness' as much? I will continue to look at this in contrast to another project where the experience is completely controlled in an enclosed space.


Movie Reference: The Truman Show

This movie features a reality TV show of a man's life where the space is constructed and completely controlled in a dome.

The question of an authentic experience is raised when the audience found out that Truman's whole life has been in this constructed dome, none of which is 'real' but since it is the only thing he has experienced for this entire life, he believes in it.

But when his 'dad' showed up again after he was announced dead, his doubts started to reemerge back. He started to question the 'truths' in his life as he remembers the remarks that Sylvia made, telling him he's being fooled.

This movie's concept relates to my interest of 'authenticity' in terms of how a constructed world and the experience gained from it can become a reality for someone who's never experienced anything else. So another case study may be the same as the dome in this movie, a total controlled space where nothing is originally existed. I am considering  options: Tropical Island Resort in Krausnick, Germany and the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK.
